Expedition 10 Crew Completes Spacewalk

The Expedition 10 crew has celebrated an eventful few days: Commander Leroy Chiao and Flight Engineer Salizhan Sharipov passed the 100th day in space mark on Jan. 21, 2005 and successfully completed their first spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS) on Jan. 26.

During the 5-hour, 28-minute spacewalk, Chiao and Sharipov installed a work platform, called the Universal Work Platform, along with its base and associated wiring. They then turned their attention to mounting the European commercial experiment Rokviss (Robotic Components Verification on ISS), which is designed to study remote operation of manipulator rotary joints and the effects of space on them.

Later, the duo relocated the Japanese Microparticle and Capture & Space Environment Exposure Device experiment to a new location on its rail-like mounting. This experiment exposes various materials to the space environment. At the old location they installed a Rokviss antenna, then ran and connected cables to link a transceiver with the experiment and the antenna.

An extra hour was added to the spacewalk to allow Sharipov and Chiao to check vents on systems that help control the Stationís atmosphere and install a scientific experiment. Before re-entering the Pirs Docking Compartment, the spacewalkers installed the Russian Biorisk experiment, which is studying the impact of spaceflight on microorganisms.

This was the 57th spacewalk conducted at the Station and the 32nd to be based out of the orbital outpost. Expedition 10 is scheduled to conduct its second spacewalk in March. During that spacewalk, Sharipov and Chiao will install navigational and communications equipment for the arrival of the first Automated Transfer Vehicle cargo craft.

Much preparation went into the first spacewalk for Sharipov and Chiao. They completed the required cardiovascular evaluation exercise; performed leak, valve and pressure checks on their Orlan spacesuits and the Orlan interface units in the Pirs Docking Compartment; completed suit communications checks; and reviewed the spacewalk plan with flight controllers in Moscow. Earlier in the week, they changed spacesuit batteries; prepared spacewalk hardware and tools; and activated and tested the suits.

On Jan. 15, flight controllers raised the Station's altitude by about five-and-one-half miles in a 20-minute reboost using engines on the Progress cargo spacecraft docked at the rear of Zvezda. That was done to put the Station in the proper orbit for the arrival of the next Progress on March 2.

For much of the following week, flight controllers conducted vibration and current tests on one of the 600-pound control moment gyros (CMGs) that control the orientation of the Station through solar power. Three of the four onboard are functioning, though the Station's attitude could be controlled with two. The CMG, which failed in mid-2002, will be replaced on the next Shuttle mission.
